Five College Preparation Tips For Parents

Is your son or daughter thinking about attending college next year?

If you are not sure which steps to take to help them to better prepare, here are some tips on what you can do to make your child’s transition to college a smooth one.

Tip 1: Schedule a campus visit.
You will find out more about what a college is really like by visiting instead of just browsing a website or looking through a catalog. A great time to visit Champion is during our annual College Days which takes place in January – although our Student Relations Office would be more than happy to help you plan a visit at a time that is most convenient for you. If possible, plan to attend one of the services of Gospel Light Baptist Church while you are here. The sooner you visit Champion, the better informed your decision will be.

Tip 2: Find out when or where the ACT or SAT standardized tests are offered in your area.
If possible, do not wait until the summer time to take the test. Taking it early will give your young person a chance to retest and to improve scores if needed.

Tip 3: Apply early.
Applying early allows you enough time to send in all required application-related materials. Most colleges require a nonrefundable application fee and, in some instances, a registration fee. Many schools, including Champion, post application information on their admissions web page.

Tip 4: Begin shopping now for college and dormitory needs.
Purchasing needed items on sale will save a lot of money. Champion has produced a special booklet which outlines student preparation for college. This booklet is made available to all students who apply. It can also be requested through our Admissions Office.

Tip 5: Secure summer employment.
Dedicating summer income to college expenses can be a great help toward tuition and other college costs.

If you are interested in a distinctively Christian education for your child with a broad range of majors, a caring faculty, and an on-fire church, we hope that you will give Champion Baptist College serious consideration.
